SALONS 6 SALON Its all about you, is what youll hear when you call 6 Salon for an appointment, and it is, from the moment you step through the doors of their 3 salons. Delight in a little me time by treating yourself to a custom cut, color, nail service or make-up, all in a crisp modern environment. But it is the attitude that makes 6 Salon the most progressivesnack trays, wine, refreshments and DJs (Thursdays) pump up the fun at the upscale salons. You wont get the cold shoulderits smiles and service all the way from the front desk right up to the owners George, Johnny and Tommy. They must be doing something right, as evidenced by the growth of their empirea hot new Birmingham salon and the swanky new digs at the MGM Grand Hotel. And you know just how amazing the atmosphere is when you realize they won "2007 Salon Design of the Year" at the 18th Annual North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) in Las Vegas. 90TH FLOOR Not actually on the 90th floor but the second, which is good because we didn’t notice an elevator. Their specialty lies in color and color correction, but they do everything else well as well. This swanky salon is the place for many at Fox 2, the station with some of the sexiest newscasters in Detroit. AGOSTA FOR MEN "This is more like it," you are likely to say...if you are a man. If you never really felt comfortable in a salon catering primarily to women and the local barbershop is not your scene, then Agosta Haircolor & Grooming For The Civilized Man (aka Agosta For Men) is the answer for you. It is located right next door to Gina Agosta Haircolor Design & Spa in Novi. It is the perfect environment for a man to get quality services and exceptional customer service. The deep wood and leather accents give the salon a masculine feel. With early morning, lunchtime and evening appointments available, a busy man can always find time to look his best. ALEX EMILIO SALON This little boutique salon, located on Main near Fourth in RO, just had to double its size to keep up with the growing clientele. Alex Emilio’s employs some of the most cutting-edge fashionable stylists in the Midwest, like Roman, for example, whose appointment book is filled nearly a year in advance. You can always pray for a cancellation, but perhaps now with the new addition, they might just be able to fit you in. ANTONINO’S 39590 W. 14 Mile Rd., Commerce The internationally renowned stylists offer the ultimate in hair care, beauty and spa services. Even tough-to-impress Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and Allure magazines have named Antonino among the country’s best. Plus, both locations will make you feel as good as you look, with their ultra-modern yet infinitely accommodating environments. AVALON SALON AND SPA Servicing men and women in a sanctuary of relaxation, this Aveda concept salon offers products that cater to the complete body, skin, hair, and environment, are pure and organic, environmentally safe, cruelty free and provide aromatherapy benefits. Let their well trained, customer service-oriented professional salon team pamper you from top to bottom with a full menu of services from hair cut and color, to nails, massage and body treatments. BANG Everybody who knows Barry Harper knows that he is about the nicest and coolest scenester in Detroit. If it’s cutting-edge or off-the-wall and happened within a 70-mile radius of the area, Barry was probably there and backstage afterward. You might think his salon would be some kind of avant-garde bohemian beatnik farm, but no way. Partner Jill keeps him in check, the salon is pretty normal even if some Barry’s clients aren’t. Bang exploded on the style scene when David’s closed shop, and business is booming. The two unlikely partners have been heavy-hitters in the hair world since the early ’90s. Together they have opened a salon that packs enough panache and hip to keep the books booked for years to come. BARBERELLA This salon is in a converted house, but that is only one of the reasons clients feel like they are hanging out at their friend’s kitschy retro pad. Sandy and her lovely assistant make you feel at home while drinking coffee and listening to great music. Sandy is an amazing stylist who does all kinds of cuts and color, and counts many local rockers and scenesters among her clientele. This fun atmosphere makes you want to come back even before your fuchsia tips start to fade. BASHAR If architects Saarinen and Starck were hanging out at Sharper Image and decided to design a hair salon it would probably look something like Bashar—the ultimate beauty experience. Stone floors highlight the whiteness of the sleek modern snipping stations and minimalism is repeated to infinity in mirrors. Throughout, the space is tricked out with high-tech; the reception area has some never-before-seen optic lighting and materials that change color electronically. Bashar Kallabat’s personal workspace is in back, a private enclave behind his star-fire custom glass doors to primp Detroit’s elite. At his fingertips is a bank of video monitors and sound system controls which, like his tools and work surfaces, all disappear discreetly into the walls. BIG BAD D PRODUCTS When you meet Big Bad D, the last thing that comes into your head is “hair stylist.” He stands 6′4″ and could b-slap Suge Knight without fear. In fact, D’s so big that he’s been talking with the WWE. His products specialize in everything for making women’s, men’s and children’s hair and nails look just fabulous. One of his outrageous hair creations even appeared on The Ricki Lake Show. He’s also a whiz on the flute, often playing live while his shows blow up in Hair Wars. BLOW The first thing you notice about Blow is the name. What the hell were they thinking? But since opening, Blow has had Novi peacocking in sparkly ’dos, pristine nails and perfectly manicured eyebrows. Running the whole hair gamut, Blow styles all varieties of heads from the family man to the disco dolly. Owners Laura and Dennis have a shop with an unpretentious mod-’60s vibe and a sweetheart staff that is almost too friendly to be true. BOCCI SALON & SPA Jay Bocci might be the most wanted man on the eastside. So in-demand are his and his wife Tracey’s services, they revamped their place and made it larger and more luxurious and added full-on spa services. You would be hard-pressed to name the coolest salon in Birmingham. In Sterling Heights the answer is simple—Bocci. The award-winning salon is where you go for hair, not because of all the flash and latest gimmicks (OK, we love it), but because they know how to treat clients, which is the most important thing, isn’t it? CAJU SALON There is a salon in almost every office building sky tower in Detroit, and this is one of the very best. CENTER STREET The always hip and worldly Carol Ellingsworth owns this boutique salon that turns out contemporary hairstyles for contemporary people. It’s the place to go for a modern ’do in an intimate, professional environment. CHAOS STUDIO SALON Chaos Studio Salon is unlike any other. With all services performed upstairs in their one-of-a-kind loft, the Chaos team is sure to find the right style to best suit you and your lifestyle. This extraordinary salon employs a talented team of educators who will take the time to teach you how to make your hair look great, even when you're not in their chair! They concentrate on the integrity of your hair using unique color techniques and specialized haircuts to get amazing results visit after visit. Stop in today and experience the salon everybody's talking about! CIASI Owner Christian Ascie, formerly of Creative Image in Dearborn, has a super loyal clientele (they still come up from Dearborn). His intimate Ferndale hair boutique is up-market and sexy. Ladies, Steven Sowers doesn’t work here any more. CLIQUE Home base of the much-lauded Jon Jordon, the stylish and handsome Channel 4 makeup artist. They call themselves a “no attitude” salon that keeps up with current trends. COLOSEUM INTERNATIONAL Coloseum International Salon & Day Spa is in a class of its own. What is important to you is important to them. Others come and go, yet, with over 35 years of experience in beauty and body wellness from trend-setting hair design to the top-of-the-line product knowledge, Coloseum International is a trusted friend. Aveda, Wella, Dermalogica and Clay Pac grace our treatment rooms not only for purchase but to also create and pamper the beauty within you. Let the staff at the Coloseum perform their expertise and professionalism to your benefit. Services include massage, manicures, pedicures, body treatments, facials, hair design and color enhancement. Pampering parties and bridal parties are a specialty! COOL C’S HAIR ACADEMY A superstar legend, Cool C’s never caught with his glasses off. Don’t call the man a hair stylist—he prefers “Multi-Talented Hair Entertainer,” who can pull off the impossible with his micro-mini curlers, shears and spritz bottle. Going 10 years strong, C’s got the imagination to stay ahead of the hair game. DYE HAIR SALON Ferndales Dye Hair Salon brings the rock to the scissors with its fuel-injected aesthetic catering to both male and female clientele. Featuring a Harley in the front window and tool-box inspired stylist stations; Dye is the place that would attract the MC5 if they were transported into the new millennium. Come and relax on the assembly line with qualified colorists and stylists led by the talented and charming Billy Sandifer, while feeling the nostalgic grooves of the Beastie Boys in the background. You may come to Dye, but will walk out with a new leash on life through rock n roll. EDWIN PAUL SALON Edwin has been a Pointe fave for a long, long, long time. FARREL REIS The charming Farrell and wife Carolyn have been doing ‘dos in the same digs in Birmingham since shags were in style. They’ve evolved with the times and now are one of the only salons to offer organic haircolor—a European formula that offers gorgeous results gently and with no ammonia. Carolyn keeps her eyes peeled for fashion finds and will have something on hand just for you in her boutique next time you stop in for a trim or to have your color touched up. Now that’s personal service. FIGO Formerly Figaro, Rino recently took over this modern concept salon. The focus here is on professional and everyday people. They have a fabulous staff that are up-to-date on current trends and traditional stylings and are also great colorists. FLIP Irene grew up in the biz. She started at Mario Max, cut her chops at Kenice Bashar and skated over to Sydney before branching out on her own. Friends and fans can find her now at her own multi-seat boutique, which brings Birmingham panache and style to Ferndale, but leaves any hint of pretension behind. The very airy space is a retro recreation of modern-age salon with blonde and black wood accents and an original terrazzo floor. An enormous hanging fabric with a custom op pattern covers a perfectly good wall and vintage porcelain faces and other objets de kitsch are on display—you get the idea, it’s whimsy! Of course it is about cutting and styling hair, not décor, and they do women, men, kids and all ethnic hair types. Plus, Irene has the cutest little sailor girl on her arm that you’ll ever see. FRINGE FULL SERVICE SALON West Bloomfield’s sleek, chic hair haven, Fringe specializes in hair care for everyone from children to ladies who lunch. Claire Kahn recently remodeled her salon to reflect her fun, funky, vibrant personality, and she and her staff are very experienced and will pull off a ’do you’d expect from a high-end Manhattan salon without any pretensions or attitude. She also offers manis, pedis and expert make-up application so you’ll be looking great from head to sparkly toe. GI’ANGELO INTERNATIONAL SALON We believe this is the only international salon in Troy. GINA AGOSTA HAIR COLOR AND DESIGN SPA Demure from the outside, but inside you will discover Agosta just goes on and on with over 5,500 square feet of style. Gina and son John actively work in the salon; she colors, he styles, and along with more than 70 other employees make up what Salon Today magazine has listed as one of the top salons in North America. Despite being one of the largest and busiest salons in the area, this place is very much about the individual. They use a concept called departmentalization, which assures that only a specialist will be performing cutting, coloring or any other service the salon offers. It seems to be working quite well; Agosta was twice named Novi's number one salon in the People's Choice Awards. They also offer spa treatments—facials, waxing and massage for the pampering you deserve, again with a specialist in every area. There's a separate salon for men, which makes everything very comfortable. GINA AGOSTA HAIR COLOR AND DESIGN Opened in December ’06, the Agosta's west side salon is in full swing. The décor has changed, but not the exceptional service and services. This new salon meets the Brighton area’s need for a relevant upscale full service salon. With the same services offered as the Novi location, Agosta's new salon is destined to become THE place in the Brighton area for award-winning professional services.. GIRLIE GIRL This salon/boutique is filling a much-needed niche on the eastside, and Girlie Girl is so unique and amazing that westsiders will even make the trek to GP. LAMIA & LAMIA The best-looking salon and day spa in the Pointes, located in an edifice so modernist one wonders how it ever passed the tough zoning rules in the Woods. Owner-brothers Charles and John Lamia, together with their wives, oversee a team of pros as expert as they are friendly. In business since 1974, the Lamias opened their first place in a vacated pharmacy farther down on Mack where they adamantly refused to install a hood dryer, signaling their commitment to the cutting edge that remains Lamia’s mission. Don’t be put off by the posh exterior and reclining black-leather chaises in the shampoo area—Lamia’s rates are competitive and their staff is unquestionably fun. He says the real heroes of the center are the eight stylists who work in this iconoclastic style shop, some as long as he has.
