MADE IN DETROIT BETTER MADE It’s a fact. Michiganders, especially in the Detroit area, eat more potato chips than people who live anywhere else in the U.S.A. We are certain Better Made is the reason why. REED LEATHER Classic motorcycle jackets, car coats and contemporary leathers still made in Detroit. CARHARTT To heck with Dickies, the fashion choice of mechanics and ravers, is headquartered in Dearborn. Try National Dry Goods in Corktown for the best selection. DETROIT SPICE COMPANY Want your home-cooked meals to taste more like your hometown? Try Detroit Spice Company seasonings, which come in really cool little tins and feature rubs and shaker spices with flavors such as Greektown, Mexican Town and Middle Eastern. FAYGO The best value in the pop aisle. But we don’t drink it simply because it is a value brand, it’s about flavor. Faygo flows in our veins. All flavors are still made right in the city, including the lifeblood of the Motown, Redpop. GUERNSEY You’ll find Guernsey milk and ice cream in grocers all over town. Headquarters for this popular dairy is on the Novi/Northville border and features a family restaurant, store and ice cream shop. There’s a large rock in front, the climbing of which serves as a rite of passage for kids. JIFFY MUFFIN MIX The nation’s best-selling cornbread mix is made right in Chelsea, and every single batch is hand stirred by Hollywood actor and Chelsea resident, Jeff Daniels. You can’t miss it—look for the Giant Jiffy, perhaps Jeff will be standing right in front waiting for your cameras. (Okay, we’re lying about Jeff.) KOWALSKI The neon sausage on Holbrook is American roadside architecture at its finest, advertising ground meat in casings at their finest. Michigan has higher standards RED PELICAN MUSTARD Red Pelican goes great on stuff that needs mustard. SANDERS Started in 1875, according to the bottle of fudge, Fred Sanders is said to have invented the hot fudge sundae, but do you see that in history books? TRUAN’S CANDY Detroit’s family-owned candy creator has been in the heart of the city since 1929. Behold the largest selection of molded chocolate novelties in the Midwest! TOPOR’S PICKLES It’s not just the zesty spice that flavors this perfect pickle; it’s the farm-fresh undertones of spring cucumbers and the all-important snap. At a 97, it’s the highest Pickle Spectator Excellence rating we have ever given. WARNING: If the juice is cloudy, the pickles are not at their peak “Toporiness.” RETAIL MICHIGAN MADE AND MORE A bounty of Michigan-made treasures awaits you in historic downtown Plymouth. From candies to candles, treats from the Mitten, such as Sanders, Morley and more—unique gifts abound. It’s wall-to-wall Michigan, or Michigan State; they support all your favorite local teams with souvenir memorabilia and clothing. They also make gift baskets filled with Winter Wonderland goodies and have a seriously large selection of lighthouses for collectors. MICHIGAN TOY SOLDIER CO. Wall to wall displays of expensive war toys, mostly for grown-ups. Patrons and war nerds come from all over the world to pay them a visit. Just don’t call the action figures dolls, they get touchy about that. PURE DETROIT 500 Griswold, Guardian Bldg., Detroit Renaissance Center, Detroit Nobody loves Detroit as much as Shawn. As the publisher of the legendary Left Banke, she supported the city harder than anyone (years before it was the in-thing). While the publication is gone, her heart and soul shine on in her much-loved city stores. Pure: the place of all things Detroit. You’ll find music, accessories, postcards, books, food, spices and just about anything, state-of-the-art or historical, as long as it was created in Detroit. But it is the apparel, mostly T-shirts of their own design, that is putting Pure on the fashion map. These aren’t sappy tourist tees; these are designed with a fashion-forward sense that would make anyone proud to wear one. Pure supports local designers and artists as well. If a city has an ego, this is the biggest boost it can get. They have Motor City gift baskets for your clients/homesick relatives. Nobody loves this city more than Shawn, except maybe her husband, collaborator and partner, Kevin. © 2007 Guide to Detroit, LLC • |
