JEWELRY AHEE JEWELERS The pinnacle of Detroit dazzle, Ahee is one of the best jewelers in the country. The late Edmund Ahee began his journey by selling jewelry and vacuum cleaners in his uncles bowling alleyand reached heights few businesses or jewelers would dream of. Today, the store is not only Grosse Pointes diamond destination, but also the citys first historical landmark. Its a large, elegant space that was formerly a DeSoto car dealership. In addition to the GP showroom, the Ahees actually own their own diamond facility in Antwerp, which explains the quality and selection of the sparkly rocks youll find. On display youll see beautiful deco pieces that were previously owned by the late Matilda Dodge (she was the richest woman in the world, and Mr. Ahee acquired her museum-quality collection). DAVID WACHLER & SONS Birmingham’s big store, this family-owned business has been around since 1922, which is pretty amazing. Wachler & Sons is an award-winning (including the Diamond International Award, which sounds pretty darn prestigious to us) jeweler with the motto “Quality matters.” (Which is a heck of a lot better than “...happens!”). You’ll feel like part of the family when you allow them to assist you in finding that perfect piece of fine jewelry, and the all-important snacks are way better than average. DARAKJIAN JEWELERS Calling themselves “the one, the only,” Darakjian is a luxury store that has there own concierge, Henri, who might be the one and only concierge in a jewelry store. The Darakjian brothers carry big designers like Baraka and Hildago. There is a full line of Montblanc writing instruments for those times when that Bic won’t cut it. DONNA D. Donna is a jewelry designer who creates fabulous one-of-a-kind, high fashion pieces from gems and semi-precious stones, crystals and beads. A celeb in her own right, she has been featured in many publications, including Essence magazine. The jewelry is a little pricey, but very pretty and you’re getting a unique piece of wearable art that will be handed down from generation to generation long after you’re gone. ELEMENTS Let the talented Brendan and his crew flex their artistic muscles to create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece at his hip jewelry hotspot. He’s been creating cool custom jewelry since the early ’90s, working with platinum, gold or silver and precious or rare semi-precious stones. Today’s Elements has gone totally 21st century. With a new state of the art CAD/CAM machine, they are able to work faster with more precision than ever before possible. They can actually show you a photo-realistic rendition of what your custom designed piece will look like before any actual work has been performed. Despite all of the high-tech computer gadgetry, Brendan still retains his organic artistic sensibility. Your custom creation will still be as unique and personal a piece as ever to complement your style and preference. EMERY’S CREATIVE JEWELERS Family owned and operated, Emery’s was established in 1947 and has maintained the same location for 22 years. Owner Terri Herman says, “Our customers tell us they could get lost in the store for hours, even though the showroom is only 1650 square feet.” Well, we believe her after browsing the selection of traditional, contemporary and one-of-a-kind pieces, including Lyric, Pandora, Nomination, Sorrelli, Judith Jack and Michal Negrin. They also do incredible custom work, making your jewelry dream into a reality, and can repair the seemingly impossible. ERIKA DAHLSTROM CUSTOM JEWELRY Erika's custom pieces are timeless, an expression of the artist and of the client who has ordered them. She bridges the gap between crystal, semi-precious stones and endless silver. Erika has a love for wire, which transcends into variations of chain mail and creative wirework. Over 15 years experience including a Master of Arts in Jewelry/Metalsmithing. FACETS OF TODD MICHAEL One of the most beautiful showpiece skyscrapers on the planet, the Fisher Building has always had a jewelry store, and custom jeweler Todd Michael carries on that tradition. When most of the other jewelers scrambled for the suburbs, Todd Michael moved in. Like the name implies, there are many facets to this store, the most important being custom one-of-a-kind creations. Offering free design is one way Todd Michael stays competitive, which he can do over the Internet, or for a more personal approach when you set up an appointment. He will work closely with you, picking the metals and gemstones that work best with your complexion, personality and lifestyle, and matching that with the metals and gems that fit your budget. After that it is a simple process to create a personal and meaningful piece you will forever treasure. GEORGE KOUEITER & SONS JEWELERS Winner of the Best Jeweler award in the Detroit News 2004 Best of Michigan. THE GOLDSMITH GALLERY For over 38 years, four generations of the Tufenkjian family have been leaders in local luxury. Designing their own pieces (completely in-house) and selling high-end designer jewelry (Christian Bauer, Jose Hess) has made Goldsmith one of the largest custom jewelers in the entire state. Their Bloomfield Hills showroom is stately and elegant, with rows of display cases loaded with some of the finest jewelry in the Midwest. There’s even a display devoted to fine jewelry for the newborn. The section devoted to distinctive gifts is larger than most entire stores, featuring impressive collections of Waterford and Swarovski crystal as well as the art of pieces of Giuseppe Armari and very limited editions of Lladro porcelain. There are quality timepieces (Hublot, LaCroix, Oris, Gucci) as well as an additional men’s case, featuring humidors and other luxury items such as solid gold St. Dupont lighters. However, it is the incredible custom creations, usually dazzling with diamonds and other precious stones, which have become the Tufenkjian signature. These one-of-a-kind pieces have made Goldsmith the place metro area jewelry lovers go to. GOLDSMITH GALLERIES You’ll find unique and original designs at Northville’s only custom jewelry store. Bring in a design idea, and Lesh and Leza will make your dream a reality. They carry a large inventory of loose diamonds, as well as brand-name watches by Louis Feraud, Bulova, Movado, Esq. and Accutron. Expert repairs—all work done on premises, while you wait. GREENSTONE’S Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and Greenstone’s is a best friend to diamond lovers. GREIS JEWELERS Don’t let the nondescript strip mall location fool you, like an oyster, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. (Just in case you don’t get it, we’re calling it a pearl, rather than a consumable bivalve.) Greis has one of the better collections of gems and timepieces about town. JULES R. SCHUBOT Specializing in uniqueness, those one-ofa- kind pieces you wont find anywhere else, Greis has developed a reputation as one of the better jewelry stores in the area. They stay on top with an eye for excellence, constantly hunting all over Europe to bring back the latest looks by preeminent designers of fine jewelry, watches and gifts. While designer diamonds, pearls, gold and platinum may be the biggest draws, it is trust which brings the customers back. Over 30 years ago, watchmaker Gary Griesdorf, together with his wife Gita, started the business, working directly with customers. Today, it is still a family operation, with son Jason carrying on this tradition of service on a first name basis. One of the biggest differences here is the salespeople are paid by salary rather than commission, so they dont swoop down on you like used car salesmen when you walk in, and while the store caters to an upscale clientele, there are plenty of entry level baubles as wellprices start at just $25. They also do appraisals and repairs for jewelry and watches. Stop by, if only to get on the mailing list so you wont miss the huge twice-a-year sales. JULES R. SCHUBOT From humble beginnings, Jules Schubot became one of the best-known jewelers in town. Today, behind the locking door system worthy of The Man from U.N.C.L.E.is one of the most exclusive jewelry shops in the area (that area being the Somerset Collection). Big-time jewelry here, from deco-inspired modern designers to Wilma Flintstone-sized pearls. The same commitment to quality goes into the snack selection as wellthese are genuine Jelly Bellys, served with a silver spoon. KARAGOSIAN JEWELERS As the “Lakes” area has grown, so has Karagosian. Mini-mansions rather than old cottages surround these lakes, and Karagosian has always kept up with times. This place has been expanded at least three times since the late ’60s. Today, the magnificent brick building it is one of the better stand-alone jewelry shops in the Metro. They have Swiss watches, diamonds and specialize in exotic gems. LUCIDO FINE JEWELRY Come see the sparkle and shine at this upscale jewelry store. Their selection is breathtaking. MARRELLA & CO. There is almost too much merchandise to fit in this interesting and intimate store, which showcases jewelry mixed with home décor, including stunning glass lighting fixtures. They have some tried and true designers plus some hip little jewelry lines and estate pieces. MB JEWELRY Morrie, Tony and Chris (do you really need to know their last names?) are designers, each specializing in a different aspect of jewelry. Together, they have a unique shop with a very cool metal façade and create just about everything from scratch, from cutting stones to casting, at their Southfield store. The result is an ever-widening court of loyal customers. METALS IN TIME With the opening of the new location in the former Detroit Bank and Trust building in downtown Royal Oak, Metals In Time has officially become the biggest and most impressive jeweler in the entire metro area. The redesign of the building was done by leading edge designer John Janviriya, who has made the formerly stodgy bank setting as hip as the designer pieces they sell. All this retail space gave them a lot more room for displaying the exquisite timepieces they are known for. Youll find more high-end designer watches here than just about any place on the planet including what has been called the worlds most sought-after watch, the Roger-Dubuis. MIT carries a stellar selection of stylish jewelry, gems of all varieties and diamonds in all sizes with styles and settings from international designers as well as in-house custom creations. Above and beyond bling for the body, you will find fine decorative objects such as gorgeous Swarovski crystal for your home and workspace. MINER’S DEN In case you didnt know it, there is more to Royal Oak than the streets of Washington and Main. The Miners Den has been off the beaten path longer than most have been on it. This is a custom house with history, but still in step with the times. ORIN JEWELERS 101 E. Main St., Northville They don’t make jewelers like they used to. Since 1933, Orin has been one of the oldest and most trusted jewelers around town. In fact, if you’re from the westside, chances are not only did your Mom’s mom shop there, if she goes back, they will still remember her name. PAT SCOTT JEWELERS They know what you want, and they have something for everyone. Voted Michigan Retailer of the Year in 2003 by the Michigan Retailers Association. RAY’D’ENCE No diamonds or gold here, but it still shines. Ray’D’Ence has what is most likely the largest collection of glass jewelry in the USA. Most likely because there are not a lot of stores anywhere specializing in this hot new trend. If you are unfamiliar, it’s similar in appearance to fine art glass, incredibly colorful in an unlimited and never identical array of translucent patterns. However, it’s impact-resistant so it can be formed into bracelets and rings and other body trinkets that you can wear without the fear of shattering. SIMMONS AND CLARK Downtown Detroit’s oldest and a most respected jeweler. Opening in the boom years of 1925, they have managed to ride out some of the worst years our beloved city has seen, from riots to the mass exodus of business owners and residents to the suburbs. Their persistence has paid off; Detroit is now truly the Renaissance City, and Simmons and Clark is still there to provide the city with all its jewelry needs, including custom design, certified diamonds and name-brand watches (including the Paul Maret timepiece, only available in this state). Check out their newly refurbished neon sign, a beacon to lovers of all that glitters. SPIRALZ Come check out the coolest collection of fine jewelry in downtown Birmingham. Contemporary and avant-garde pieces featuring platinum, gold, sterling silver, diamonds and precious stones, and the stunning Italian-designed creations of Pianegonda, Calgaro and La Nouvelle Bague. Spiralz was created to bring the most world-renowned jewelry designers to you. STONE’S JEWELRY Neale’s personality sparkles almost as much as his beautiful assortment of fine jewelry and artwork. TAPPER’S It looks like the Tapper family takes up the entire mall; inside you’ll discover they only use most of it. Offering one the largest selection of diamonds since 1977, Tapper’s is a trusted name in the gem game. They have a huge array of designers, many exclusive to this store, including the Elara Diamond, a stunning and completely unique square diamond. Snacks are a bowl of bite-sized candy bars, apparently from Pennsylvania. THOMAS NEVIN JEWELERS The Nevin family jewelry business has been serving the Mt. Clemens/Macomb County area for over 20 years offering exclusive designs for both women and men. Choose from rings, pendants, necklaces, earrings and much more. All are offered in a variety of metals and price ranges. Update your something old into something new. Personalized service and expert repairs are done on premises. Visit during the very popular Girls Night Out in Mt. ClemensApril 10, August 7, and November 13, 2008. YAW GALLERY While the Yaw Gallery doesn’t classify itself as a jewelry store, we have no problem doing so. A large portion of the art on display here is meant to worn rather than hung. You’ll find rings and other baubles from some of the nation’s leading lapidary artists, as well as beautiful objects for your home. © 2008 Guide to Detroit, LLC |
