GREEK

AUBURN CAFÉ
3520 W. Jefferson, Ecorse
313-381-8133

It’s been called the best Greek food downriver. They may not have the extensive selection of Greektown eateries, but what they do have (kind of a best-of) is fantastic. Shish kabobs and lamb chops excel here, as do the grape leaves and salads. No wonder they’ve kept the same employees and clients since they opened over 20 years ago.

CYPRUS TAVERNA
579 Monroe, Detroit
313-961-1550

Cyprus is known for traditional Greek dishes such as moussaka and lamb specialties, as well as modernized takes on dishes like pastitzi, available with or without meat. The staff is always relentlessly friendly, even at 3:43 a.m. when they’re just about to shut down for the night.

GOLDEN FLEECE
525 Monroe, Detroit
313-962-7093
www.goldenfleecerestaurant.com

We aren’t pulling the wool over your eyes; this is one great place. They follow the Greek formula with old family recipes for all the faves from delicious dips, salads and soups to the requisite lamb platters, in a fun and boisterous environment.

LAIKON CAFE
569 Monroe, Detroit
313-963-7058

A Greek favorite since 1927 that’s been making us happy as long as we can remember. Some swear that the leg of lamb and marinated octopus just taste better at the Laikon. Perhaps it’s Chef Kostas’ personal touch.

LITTLE DADDY’S
29649 Northwestern Hwy., Southfield
248-358-1700

22250 Eureka Rd., Taylor
734-287-8600

39500 N. Woodward, Bloomfield Hills
248-647-3400

Little Daddy’s is the Greek restaurant made famous by its (then) Red Wing owners, Darren McCarty and Bob Probert, who brought saganaki to the suburbs. You can still get great Greek here, but Little Daddy’s has evolved into a family restaurant for the now generation. Colorful, big, boisterous and bright, it’s a huge step up from your corner coney, with a very extensive multi-page menu and tons of daily specials. Heart-healthy items abound—low fat, low carb and lite bites, plus just about everything else you non-dieters crave, from burgers to pasta. Fast lunches and an unbelievable ($1.29!) breakfast special.

MR. GREEK CONEY ISLAND
6339 Orchard Lake Rd., West Bloomfield
248-932-0788

There are coney islands and then there is Mr. Greek Coney Island. It is somewhere in between a Greek restaurant, your typical coney joint and a family restaurant with contemporary upscale entrées (no doubt due to the location in a swanky W. Bloomfield mall). In addition to the large assemblage of Greek specialties and chili-covered dogs, you’ll find culinary surprises such as seared tuna and fresh buffalo mozzarella. Great sandwiches and gyros, stupendous salads, and enough general kabobery to satisfy any need you have for a good Greek meal.

NEW PARTHENON
547 Monroe, Detroit
313-961-5111

This multi-level Gyropolis is wall-to-wall marble. The tzatziki with yogurt, cucumber and lots and lots of garlic is as good as it gets. The owner is said to be the creator of Saganaki O-pa!, the flaming Kasseri cheese that makes Detroit’s Greektown way more fun than the Greektowns in Chicago, Toronto and Athens. You’ll find all of the other Greek dishes you (and the celebrities whose pictures hang on the wall) love; the menu is very extensive and authentic. While you’re at it, now is a great time to start acquiring the taste for retsina, the Greek wine of the gods.

OLYMPIA RESTAURANT
532 Monroe, Detroit
313-964-4774

Authentic Greek goodies await in this Greektown favorite that opens right into the casino. Greek salads, all kinds of lamb (ground, roasted, in chops and shish kabobs), a surprising variety of seafood and the city’s best spinach pie keep loyal patrons coming back, 24 hours a day.

PEGASUS TAVERNA
558 Monroe, Detroit
313-964-6800

When it opened, Pegasus brought upscale to Greektown. It remains the intelligent choice when you’re looking for a little carnivorous activity in Greektown. The open-air grill works on your brain’s primitive Jurassic instincts, luring you in from the street with the sight and captivating smells of succulent chops. The best lamb chops to be found since Mary had a little one, and you’ll want a plateful. They have all the Greek goods you expect— flaming platters as well as the classics. But it is the grill that sets them apart; order the combination plate because you won’t want to miss the grilled shrimp.

PLAKA CAFE
535 Monroe, Detroit
313-962-4687

They have all the anticipated Greek dishes, but what sets this place apart is the breakfast. Whether you’re in the mood for breakfast at 3:00 p.m. or 3:00 a.m., the Plaka awaits with 24-hour service. Try the French toast, voted the city’s best by Metro Times readers.

UPTOWN PARTHENON
4301 Orchard Lake Rd., West Bloomfield
248-538-6000

Greektown comes to the suburbs. Uptown is owned by the folks behind the famous New Parthenon in Detroit’s Greektown. There is everything on the menu you will find downtown, from succulent lamb to flaming hors d’oeuvres, and even the wonderful Parthenon cake— kind of like a Greek tiramisu; but with a more pineapple upside down angel food flavor…just try it, you will love it. Generous portions, friendly staff and a warm, welcoming vibe make this a neighborhood favorite.
