BREAKFAST

ATLAS GLOBAL BISTRO
3111 Woodward, Detroit
313-831-2241

Until Atlas came around, Detroit didn’t have the right breakfast vibe. The standouts are the gourmet omelets with ingredients usually reserved for special occasion dinners. Sure there’s regular breakfast stuff, it’s just a little fancier and globally astute. It is the only place we’ve seen quail eggs sunny-side up.

BEVERLY HILLS GRILL
31471 Southfield, Beverly Hills
248-642-2355

Everything on the menu reads like a standout dish. Crab cakes Benedict, lobster omelets and the BHG pancakes are considered among the world’s finest. One of the best big-caliber brunches around.

BREAKFAST CLUB
30600 John R, Madison Heights
248-307-9090

38467 W. 10 Mile Rd., Farmington
248-473-0714

There’s a line out the door but the regulars don’t seem to mind the wait. From the fresh squeezed OJ to the chocolate-covered strawberry with the bill, you’ll be blown away by the incredibly creative, high-quality morning fare.

CAFE HABANA
419 S. Main St., Royal Oak
248-544-6255

Cuban-inspired breakfasts feature fantastic French toast and stuffed arepas.

CAFE MARIE
1759 Plymouth Rd., Ann Arbor
734-662-2272

The place for a distinctly delicious breakfast, brunch or lunch in Ann Arbor. Huge selection of Benedicts, including smoked salmon and chorizo and salsa. Flapjacks to die for, although with their heart-healthy whole-wheat batter, you’ll live to dine again another day. Skillets, frittatas, and classic or cutting-edge omelets round it out.

DETROIT BREAKFAST HOUSE & GRILL
1241 Woodward Ave., Detroit
313-961-1115
www.detroitbreakfasthouse.com

Power breakfast is one of those shudder-worthy buzz words of modernity, but if you gotta do it, why not the best? Mood music, vibrant colors, décor meant to stage-set another dynamic Detroit day combine to energize Chef Nottage’s trio of menus (breakfast, lunch, light dinner) which include both classics and concepts—robust eggs Benedict with house-made hollandaise to a wow-worthy fried chicken and waffle club. Both ambient and aggressive, the Grill offers metro power brokers a chance to wheel and deal over a real meal and offers everyone the opportunity to get a truly great first meal for the first time since, forever.

THE EARLY BIRD
3415 Orchard Lake Rd., Keego Harbor
248-682-3918

Perhaps the perfect breakfast place—not too fancy, too pedestrian or too pricey. From the fresh squeezed OJ to scratch-made pancakes and waffles, and way better than average breakfast meats.

FRITTATA
236 S. Main St., Clawson
248-280-2552

As the name implies, baked Italian omelets are the main feature at this European-style breakfast bistro. They do them up a lot of ways, or you can build your own or pick something else off the very comprehensive menu—like the French toast, which is fantastic.

LEO’S COUNTRY OVEN
28611 John R, Madison Heights
248-399-9939

Of all the family restaurants where we’ve dined, this is one of our top favorites. Nothing fancy: just good service, great prices and greater portions.

MAPLE LEAF CAFÉ
297 E. Maple Rd., Birmingham
248-723-1222
www.mapleleafcafebham.com

The best reason we’ve found not to skip breakfast, this unassuming diner should rate up at the top of anyone’s best-of list. High end and organic, they amazed us with the quality of the ingredients, and blew us away with the preparations. Thick juicy applewood bacon, straddling divine egg dishes and heavenly made-from-scratch pancakes (lemon now being our world favorite) are just a few of the reasons breakfast is now the most important meal of the day. Even the jelly here is housemade. But don’t miss lunch—when the meatloaf comes with potatoes mashed to order, Mom just doesn’t seem as comforting as she used to.

MOE’S ON TEN
39455 W. 10 Mile Rd., Novi
248-478-9742

Formerly Leon’s, a family diner, they now feature seafood dinners. But you can get a value-priced, high quality Vegas-style brunch on Sundays—all fresh ingredients and made-to-order waffles as well. The bacon, ham and sausage is good, not that typical cheap buffet stuff. And best of all, Moe himself is likely to make your omelet.

ORIGINAL PANCAKE HOUSE
20273 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Woods
313-884-4144
And various locations

They oven-bake the omelets and pancakes (like the Big Apple) in this legendary boutique franchise.

TOAST
23144 Woodward, Ferndale
248-398-0444

Yes, even breakfast can be hip. Casual upscale Ferndale noshing with legendary Grand Marnier French toast and huevos rancheros that have drawn raves from everyone. A variety of outstanding omelets, all made with top-shelf ingredients, are the backbone of this hot spot eatery. This is a big city breakfast: fun, fresh and food-forward. Lunch follows in the same vein, featuring tasty sandwiches and plates made with premium meats, imported cheeses, designer breads and usually a few fancy twists that breathe new life into the two most important meals of the day.
